Step-by-step guides for the things people ask about most, and answers to common questions. If you're stuck on anything else, email support@use-tape.com and a human will reply.

Record your screen

Recording runs entirely in your browser. You don't need an account, an extension, or an install, and nothing leaves your device until you choose to upload.

  1. Open use-tape.com/record in a desktop browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari).

  2. On the Get Ready screen, pick your microphone under Audio / Mic Input. The level meter moves when it can hear you. Turn the camera on if you want a face bubble over your screen.

  3. Click Start Recording. Your browser asks which screen, window or tab to share. Choose one and confirm.

  4. A short countdown runs, then recording begins. A small controls window shows the timer.

  5. Click Stop Recording when you're done. Tape opens the preview page with your recording ready to trim, download or share.

Good to know: To capture sound from a browser tab (a video call or a demo with audio), share that tab rather than the whole screen and tick the share-audio option in the browser's dialog. Chrome and Edge support this; Firefox and Safari capture microphone audio only.

Trim a recording

Cut the dead air at the start and end before anyone sees it.

  1. On the preview page, find the Trim strip under the video.

  2. Drag the Trim start handle to where the recording should begin, and the Trim end handle to where it should finish. The player follows the handles so you can check the cut points.

  3. Use Reset trim to go back to the full recording at any time before you upload.

  4. Upload as normal. The cuts are applied to the hosted copy when it uploads.

Good to know: Trims are applied on upload and can't be undone on the hosted copy. If you want to keep the untrimmed version, download it first.

Share a recording

Uploading creates a share page at use-tape.com/tape/… with a real video player, so viewers can watch without signing in or asking for permissions.

  1. On the preview page, give your tape a title. Click the title to edit it.

  2. Optionally run the AI summary first (see the next guide) so the share page includes a summary, key points and transcript.

  3. Click Upload & share (or Upload with summary if you've generated one). If you're not signed in, Tape asks you to sign in with Google, Microsoft or an email link.

  4. When the upload finishes, the share link is copied to your clipboard and the Your tape is live panel opens. Use Copy link to copy it again later.

  5. Paste the link wherever you like. Anyone with the link can watch. The page shows a view count.

Good to know: Free accounts can host 5 tapes at a time, of any length. Delete a tape from My Library to free up a slot, or upgrade to Pro for unlimited hosted tapes.

Generate an AI summary and transcript

Tape can write a title, summary, key points and full transcript from the audio of your recording.

  1. On the preview page, open the AI Summary & Transcript section and start a run. Reading the audio takes around 20 seconds for a typical recording.

  2. Review the result. Every field is editable: click the title, summary or transcript to fix anything the AI got wrong.

  3. Use Copy Text or Copy Markdown to paste the title, summary, key points and transcript into a ticket, document or email.

  4. Upload the tape and the summary travels with it, so your share page includes the same text with copy buttons for viewers.

Good to know: Free accounts get 5 AI runs per rolling 30-day period. Only successful runs count. Pro accounts have no cap. Runs work best on recordings with up to about ten minutes of speech.

Protect a share link with a password

Pro accounts can lock a share page so only people with the password can see the video, title, summary and transcript.

  1. Open the tape's share settings: they appear when a tape uploads, or open an existing tape from My Library and use the share settings on its Shared card.

  2. In the password section, enter a password of at least 4 characters and click Set password.

  3. Send the link and the password separately. Viewers are asked for the password before anything on the page loads, and link previews show only a generic title.

  4. To open the page up again, use Remove password in the same panel.

Good to know: You always bypass the password on your own tapes while signed in. Repeated wrong guesses on a tape pause further attempts for a while, so a guessed password is not a realistic risk.

Stop sharing or delete a tape

You stay in control of every link you've published.

  1. To take a link down but keep the recording, open the tape from My Library, open its share settings and choose Stop sharing. The link stops working immediately and the recording stays in your library.

  2. To delete a tape completely, open My Library and use Delete Recording on the tape, or open the tape and click Delete. Confirm the prompt. This removes the video from Tape's storage along with its share page and AI text.

  3. If you exported a copy to Google Drive or OneDrive, that copy is yours and is not touched. Delete it in Drive or OneDrive if you no longer want it.

Save a copy to your own device or cloud

Your recordings are yours. Every plan can download the file or send a copy to your own cloud storage.

  1. On the preview page, look for the Also: row under the publish card and click download to save the video file to your computer. Chrome, Edge and Firefox save a .webm file; Safari saves an .mp4.

  2. To back up to your own cloud, sign in with Google or Microsoft, then click Backup to Google Drive or Backup to OneDrive in the same row. Tape only ever touches files it created.

  3. The exported copy is independent of Tape. Deleting the tape in Tape leaves your Drive or OneDrive copy in place.

Good to know: If you signed in with an email link, Tape has no Drive or OneDrive access. Sign in with Google or Microsoft on the same account to unlock export.

Upgrade, manage or cancel Pro

Pro is a personal subscription billed in Australian dollars through Stripe. There are no seats or team plans.

  1. Sign in and click Upgrade in the top bar. Choose monthly (A$8) or annual (A$79, about 18% off) and click the upgrade button.

  2. Complete payment on Stripe's checkout page. Promo codes can be entered there. You're returned to Tape and Pro is active straight away.

  3. To change your card, download invoices or cancel, click Pro in the top bar and open the billing portal.

  4. Cancelling takes effect at the end of the current billing period. Your hosted tapes stay online; if you're over the free limit afterwards you can't upload new ones until you're back under it, but nothing is deleted.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account to record?

No. You can record and download as much as you like without signing in. You only need an account to upload a tape for sharing, run AI summaries, or export to Google Drive or OneDrive.

Which browsers and devices does Tape work on?

Tape works in current desktop versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Screen capture isn't available in phone or tablet browsers, so recording needs a laptop or desktop. Watching a share page works on any device.

Where are my recordings stored?

Until you upload, a recording lives only in your browser's local storage on that device. That's why My Library shows different recordings on different computers, and why clearing your browser data removes local recordings. Uploaded tapes are stored with our hosting provider, Cloudflare, and appear in My Library on every device you sign in on under Cloud Tapes.

What are the free plan limits?

Unlimited local recording and downloads of any length, 5 hosted tapes at a time (any length, up to 4 GB per file), 5 AI runs per rolling 30-day period, and export to your own Google Drive or OneDrive. Share pages on the free plan carry a small Get Tape badge.

What does Pro add?

Unlimited hosted tapes (fair use: 100 GB of storage), unlimited AI summaries and transcripts, password-protected share links, and no Tape branding on your share pages. Pro is A$8 a month or A$79 a year, and you can cancel any time.

Is there a video length limit?

No. Free and Pro tapes can be any length. The only hard limit is 4 GB per file, which is several hours of typical screen recording.

How does the AI work, and is my recording used to train models?

When you run AI on a tape, its audio is sent to Google's enterprise Gemini API to produce the title, summary, key points and transcript. Under the paid API terms we use, Google does not train on your content, and neither do we. Recordings you never run AI on are never sent to Google at all. AI output can contain mistakes, so check it before relying on it.

Can viewers see my other recordings?

No. Each share link points to one tape. There is no public profile or listing, and private or deleted tapes return the same not-found page as links that never existed.

Who can see a share link?

Anyone who has the link, unless you've set a password (Pro). Links aren't listed anywhere and aren't included in search-engine sitemaps, but they're not secret. Use Stop sharing to take a page down at any time.

The view count seems low. How is it counted?

A view is counted at most once per viewer per tape every 60 seconds, so refreshing or re-watching doesn't inflate it.

Can I record my camera without my screen?

Not yet. Tape records your screen, optionally with a camera bubble and microphone. Camera-only recording is on the list.

Can I add teammates or share a subscription?

Pro is a personal plan with no seats or team features. Each person who wants Pro needs their own subscription.

How do I get a refund or dispute a charge?

Email support@use-tape.com from the address on your account with the approximate charge date and we'll sort it out. Nothing here limits your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.

How do I delete my account?

Delete any tapes you no longer want from My Library, then email support@use-tape.com from your account's email address and ask us to close the account. We'll remove your account data promptly and confirm by reply.

Is there a Chrome extension or desktop app?

Not at the moment. Tape is designed to run in the browser with nothing to install. If we publish an extension, it will be announced on the blog.

Still need a hand?

Email us with a description of what happened, the browser you're using, and a share link if one is involved. We read everything and usually reply within a business day, Australian time.
